Very good job! Eventually I've experinced building the plugins simple, after days of frustration with the misleading chapter in "Integrating and extending BIRT" book.

PS: I think it'd be a criminal shame to stop doing this blog. Use it as a place to share your experiences as you go from 1.0 code to feedback, a place to garner suggestions, etc.

Keep it going!

Rudd, first of all, congratulations on your accomplishment! We're all excited for you. As I see it, your work is a foundation for a long journey as you continue to be involved with OpenMRS and the open source community as a whole.

There will be a lot of interest and notoriety likely stirred up through the work that you and Justin have done integrating with BIRT. I want to encourage you to visit conferences and revel in your success, and place yourself in a position where you can get some real world reactions to your code.

I will personally do everything I can to remove barriers for your continued involvement, whether it be financial (getting you to places for meetings) or technical (getting you in close contact with people in the BIRT community). If there's something that you feel is getting in the way of your continued involvement, let us know, and we'll do what we can to help.

Know that your work will have a valuable place in helping save people's lives! That's not just rhetoric to pump you up either, and I challenge you to make time to see what I mean for yourself!

Best, -Paul

Another great blog. Thanks Rudd. Add the mockup for the entity/token chooser to the blog to give people a sense of what's coming.

And bring on the questions!

Rudd,

The major reason for providing a plugin that interfaces with the OpenMRS API (via web services) is to hide the implementation details of the OpenMRS data model. This means the user doesn't have to worry about performing complex joins when defining their report data set (all that is done in the background). As you say, the main point of this plug-in is to be as transparent as possible.

Good post.

This is great. So what do you feel is the next step? I feel like there are three things that can be done from here.

(1) Improve the UI plugin (we should mock this up)
(2) Improve the runtime plugin (handles querying)
(3) Add servlet to return tokens and data

I can help out with #3, but I guess we need to discuss how we're going to communicate back-and-forth. Have you played with the XML/CSV plugins to see how they handle (1) and (2)?

Again, great job.
